Eurovet Animal Health BV, announces the launch of Comfortan®, the 1st veterinary licensed methadone HCl 10 mg/ml injectable for dogs in Europe.

After three decades of successful veterinary use in the Netherlands, the Dutch based company, took the decision to bring the product to the European market. The necessary European decentralized procedure for an improved multidose vial was finalized last February.

Methadone belongs to the class of full μ (mu) opioid receptor agonists which provide most efficacious opioid analgesia compared to partial mu receptor agonists such as buprenorphine or kappa receptor agonists such as butorphanol. Comfortan® has a quick onset and optimal analgesic duration of action of approximately 4 hours. Furthermore, it has mild sedative properties which make it suitable for the premedication for general anaesthesia or neuroleptanalgesia in combination with a neuroleptic drug.

Comfortan® is now available in Germany, the United Kingdom, France and Denmark. Other European markets will follow in due time.
